Reminder about K.A.R 109-2-5 (r)
March 31, 2013
This is a reminder that K.A.R 109-2-5 (r) requires that patient care activities are reviewed once each quarter, and that the review of patient care activities include the quarterly participation by the service’s medical director. These reviews must be indicated by the medical directors electronic or handwritten signature.
As we are reviewing Quality Assurance during our inspection process we are finding a number of medical directors who are not conducting patient care reviews on a quarterly basis. We have found some who have done multiple quarters at once. Please insure that your medical directors are reviewing patient care activities on a quarterly basis and documenting such reviews, and maintaining this documentation for at least three years.
The most frequent area found to be non-compliance remains outdated medications on the ambulances. We cannot allow out dated medications to stay on the units according to our inspection policy. With 24 – 48 hours up to a week of advanced notification for inspections, we shouldn’t be seeing this problem. The State Board of Pharmacy makes no exceptions unless the dates have been revised by the manufacturer.
