Service Director Workshop

The Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services and Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Bureau of Community Health Systems are pleased to announce a one-day workshop specifically for Rural EMS Service Directors.

Date:  Saturday, October 27, 2012

Location:  Barton County Community College, Great Bend

Although there is no registration fee for this workshop, seating is limited. Priority will be given to those attendants currently in Service Director’s positions from KBEMS permitted rural and frontier EMS Services. The definition of frontier and rural are the same as applied to the Education Incentive Grant. Service directors from rural and frontier EMS services are also eligible to receive free lodging for the night prior to the workshop. You will be notified if you qualify for free lodging. Attendees will be provided reference materials both in printed and digital format to serve as reference materials upon return to their services.

Workshop Sessions include:  

 “Recruiting and Retention, It Doesn’t Take a Ton of Money to Get a Ton of Results”

Speaker:  Kyle Starr, Assistant Chief over EMS operations, Red Lodge, MT

The presentation will provide EMS leaders with low and no-cost ideas to help rural EMS departments in the critical area of recruiting and retaining volunteers.  Kyle Starr is a full-time assistant chief/EMS operations officer with Red Lodge Fire Rescue in Red Lodge, MT. Born and raised in Kansas, Kyle became an EMT-B in 1998 and obtained his paramedic license in 2004.   Most recently, Kyle’s article on How to Successfully Recruit Volunteers was featured in EMS World magazine.


“Ambulance Billing – Tips & Tricks to Maximize Your Billing and Minimize Your Headaches; Medicaid Changes – New MCO’s”

Speaker:  Nancy Ratzlaff, Billing Director for LifeTeam

The presentation will provide an understanding of collection possibilities in an effort to assist service directors to maximize claims returns. Nancy has been involved in EMS in one capacity or another since 1993 when she first obtained her EMT certification.  She obtained her EMT-I certification in 1995 but her primary focus for the past nineteen years has been EMS/Ambulance billing. She is the founder of the Kansas Ambulance Providers group which assists ambulance billers throughout Kansas with Medicare and other billing issues.  She serves as a member of the Center for Medicare, Medicaid Services (CMS) Provider Education/Training (PET) group for the State of Kansas since its inception in 2010.  For the past eight years she has worked as the Billing Director for LifeTeam air ambulance service headquartered in Newton, KS.

“Service Survival” – Panel Discussion

Moderator: Joseph House, Deputy Director, KBEMS

The panel discussion includes service directors who have dealt with the potential of service closure and who have turned the situation around. Find out how did they did it and what on-going challenges they face.

KS EMS Updates will be provided by Agency Managers specific to education (Joseph House), operations (Dave Cromwell) and data collection (Joe Moreland). Learn what’s new and ask your questions of KBEMS Staff.
